AVIARY is an annual week of improvisation and discovery led by BIRDHOUSE director Raven Taisce White and the artists of BIRDHOUSE, featuring collaborator slowdanger. The program aims to provide an entrance into a new way of considering self, the mind-body, and the infinite (yet daunting) possibilities presented by improvisation.
Improvisation is the core of the BIRDHOUSE creative process. We build from ideas of unknowing what we accept as truth, relearning ourselves and the world around us, and finding the substance of humanity that remains after everything has fallen away. In the past two years, this practice has allowed us to create work we love and to fundamentally change our understandings of the world.
We want to bring what has been a life-changing process for us to other artists who are striving to find understanding and possibility in their journey to create meaningful work. And, of course, we have so much to learn from you.
Each BIRDHOUSE member provides a new entrance into improvisation, while Raven bookends the week with climbs through the windows of the unknown.
In order to make AVIARY accessible to people of any movement experience, no live or video audition is required. Tuition for AVIARY is pay-what-you-can, with a suggested donation of $200.
Applicants are expected to participate in all 5 days of AVIARY, with exceptions for those who have necessary work shifts during the day.
Applications will reopen in 2020.
